I happened to need to drive in to work thursday morning so I left a bit early
so I could check out North Avenue. It was around 7am and nothing was
out from Clyborn to California that was an obvious SW except:
One nice looking black SW at North and Hermitage. She was boldly standing
in the street on the north side near the Citgo. I passed her by several
times over the next 45minutes as I checked out North Avenue.
As I passed her the 2nd and subsequent times I spotted a police minivan
at Wabansia and Paulina parked there for the entire period of time.
At least one cop in it. I decided to walk past. She looked at me but
did not speak at all as I passed her. I spotted a black Grand Am in
the Citgo parking lot and inside was a plainclothes officer with vest.
Definately a sting but it seems like no one sprung the trap that hour.
So be careful on North Ave.

DENVER'S JOHNS TO APPEAR ON TV

Officials hope risk of embarrassment curbs prostitution

Tune in next week for 15 minutes of shame.

Following the lead of the city next door, Denver is poised to begin displaying the faces of convicted prostitutes and their clients on the city's cable channel and Web site.

Johns TV, as the city calls it, will air on Channel 8 twice a day, every day, beginning July 25. The names and photos also will be posted on the Internet at [url]www.denvergov.org.[/url]

"If you're willing to risk getting arrested for the crime of prostitution, and you're willing to risk catching a sexually transmitted disease, now you risk having your picture put on Denver Channel 8 and the city's Internet site for the whole world to see," said Andrew Hudson, spokesman for Mayor Wellington Webb.

The plan, announced by Webb in his State of the City address, grew out of frustration over rampant prostitution in Capitol Hill and East Colfax neighborhoods. Residents said their families have been exposed to sexual activity in alleys and cars and have found used condoms in their backyards, Hudson said.
"There's a huge disgust factor that goes along with the types of stories we hear from these neighborhoods," he said. "Hopefully, the potential risk of embarrassment will be enough to keep men from going down there."

In the past eight years, Aurora has published about 400 pictures in the weekly Aurora Sentinel of those arrested in sting operations, Deputy City Attorney George Zierk said. The affected neighborhood has improved, business owners have told him.
"There's word out that Aurora enforces its laws," Zierk said. "When people come into town now and ask where they should go, the answer is - not here."

In 1995, the state Supreme Court refused to hear a Brighton businessman's challenge to the Aurora law. His photo was published the following Wednesday.

Variations on the theme exist in many cities, including Oklahoma City; Hartford, Conn.; St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Boston.
In St. Paul, Minn., police have been posting arrest photos of prostitutes and their clients on the Internet since 1998. It's the city's most popular Web site, said Michael Jordan, St. Paul police spokesman.

"People have made complaints," he said. "They say things like,
'You're invading my privacy, you ruined my marriage.' To which we say - it's not our fault you broke the law."
Some unexpected faces have been posted: Jordan said a guard at the state prison in Duluth, Minn., became the top story for his local television station and newspaper the day his picture appeared.

Another was a well-known minister. "He tried really hard to convince his flock that he was just trying to shepherd this poor woman away from her evil ways," Jordan said.

While St. Paul and many other cities publish the photos of people arrested in stings, Denver will only display the names and photos of people convicted. The show premieres with convictions dating back to July 3, Hudson said.

"They'll be the first stars of Johns TV."

Sorry your cruise of the south suburbs was so unsuccessful. I wish I could say your luck was just bad, but I'm afraid that your experience was not unusual.

Most of the areas are pretty hit-and-miss -- my success rate is such that I wouldn't recommend that anyone go out of their way to visit. I cruise the area because it's my home turf.

That said, I think you may have been a bit late -- at least for the Heights portion of your trip. I've practically never seen anything out that late (OTOH, I'm seldom out that late, either). I've seen a bit more action than you describe, but usually before 9PM.

The farther-north portions of your routh -- 119th and thereabouts, I don't know much about.

The best bet for seeing a decent-looking girl is Chicago Road between 16th and 26th -- a few whites, occasionally as high as a 6 or a very generous 7. But again, earlier in the evening. And Chicago Road is probably the most spotty of all the strolls -- less than 50% of the time is there ANYTHING there.

Was interested that you visited D Los Club -- I've been meaning to check it out. Given the neighborhood, though, I was wondering if it was white-friendly. Also -- was there any indication that take-out was available?

What village is that? Some of the clubs in Harvey (Skybox, for sure, maybe others) have been busted for prostitution -- because the cops/prosecutors chose to define lapdancing as prostitution. LOL -- no kidding. The logic was that it was a sexual act because it was meant to arouse, there was contact between bodies (even if clothed), and money changed hands -- therefore it was prostitution.

It's been tried in other areas, and I understand that any time it has gone to court the judges have laughed at the prosecutors and thrown it out -- but that doesn't make it ineffective as a harrassment tactic.

Anyway, thanks for the great report. It certainly seems that we share interests -- you may have noted that most of my reports deal with primarily black areas (the Heights, Harvey, Prairie, Madison). I've never been very nervous in those sections, though I've had a few unpleasant experiences (never had a brick thrown through my window or a shot fired at me -- that might have cured me).
