I generally go by that rule, too. But sometimes I break it. I don't mind calling someone who has a good reputation in another town and is on tour -- though often that sort of person is out of my price range. I'll also make an exception for someone who seems to have been here a while, despite the out-of-town area code. With cell phones, area codes don't mean as much as they used to. Someone could live in Lexington ten years and still have a cell number from her old home town.
