Sheriffs arrest 21 in Craigslist hooker ring

Wayne County undercover officers said today they’ve arrested 10 women and 11 men who hooked up for acts of prostitution through Craigslist.com, meeting at hotels and motels at Metro Airport and elsewhere in Wayne County.

The arrests came in three days of stings targeting Craigslist, the free marketplace on the Internet where the women advertised as escorts and companions, only to charge up to $175 to $200 an hour as prostitutes. One was caught with $16,000 in her hotel room, according to investigators with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office who today towed away two cars from the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Romulus. They said the vehicles belonged to the prostitutes’ customers.

Sheriff Warren Evans charged Wednesday that Craigslist is major source of prostitution. He said the evidence will be sent to Chicago to bolster a federal civil case filed March 5 against the giant Internet firm by the Cook County sheriff. The lawsuit demands that Craigslist remove listings under the heading “erotic services.”

The prostitutes’ 11 customers were all from metro Detroit, but the women – aged 20 to 38 — were from Las Vegas and Missouri as well as Detroit and suburban Detroit, said Lt. Walter Epps, in charge of special operations for the department.

Undercover deputies have found prostitution in at least seven hotels and motels in Dearborn, Canton and several other Wayne County locations using Craigslist advertisements. Each of those arrested is to be charged with prostitution-related offenses, 90-day misdemeanors that carry fines of up to $500 upon conviction, Epps said. Police impounded 15 cars “so far — some of the johns’ and some of the girls’,” he said.

The series of stings is to continue through the week, but they’re confined to hotels and motels in Wayne County “although we traced some of these ads to Oakland County,” Sgt. Larry Crider said.

Crown Plaza Hotel general manager Daniel Duffy said today that hotel staffers were unaware of any prostitution until notified by police, "and then we cooperated."

“I've worked at 10 hotels in my lifetime and I've never seen this before," Duffy said

I see the LE activity reported here, and so I guess I have my answer to my CL inquiry of a few days ago. (Although I note that outside of Wayne County there is perhaps less risk.)

Nevertheless it looks to me like my best bet for a little stress release will be in the Strip Club back rooms or visiting one of the AMP's.
