Spitzer got caught by the Patriot Act. He was transferring relatively large sums of money out of his account and someone at his bank became suspicious. The Patriot Act requires banks to pay more attention to these types of transactions and report any "suspicious" activity. Normally it take $10,000 to draw attention, but his repeated large transfers of multis-thousands did him in.

I feel for Mr. Spitzer and his family because our society makes Hypocrites and criminals out of all of us for doing what our genetic make up requires that we do. Sure we can control it somewhat but Mother Nature will always win in the end.
So NY loses a talented man that cleaned up a ton of corruption on Wall street, they blew up his family,career etc. for what--a BOGUS charge. he was just doing what his body is programmed to do.
If he was caught with his secretary nobody would care, John McCaine taps a lobbyist, naughty ,naughty, Belvin Perry chief judge in orange county gets caught tapping his secretary and he still sits in his office on top of that big courthouse in downtown Orlando. These men and millions of others are doing it every minute of every day, Spitzer gets ready for a great weekend in Washington with a PROSTITUTE, AND OH MY GAWD !!!

Great post - What a waste and what a foolish thing to do. Nobody, but nobody is immune. We are all on the wire, he of all people should have known the rules. Everybody in the world will be on You Tube this week and community TV next week.
Spitzer caused this - he just knew he was too big, too smart, and too powerful to get caught, especially at $5,000 a poke. He just knew that some things are guaranteed. The problem was, all the guarantees were in his own head, reality as it's played in the world has different rules. Very few people ever understand the difference.
No question he should be given a free pass, but, liberal crime buster that he may be, he is still a hypocrite, and that, to me, is the crime, hypocrisy. Was there ever a compelling need for him to prosecute prostitutes? (Interesting, the words have the same roots. I wonder if they are connected.) And the sharks on Wall Street, bloodied by him, smell his blood now. It's all too sad.

I'm not on the up-and-up with NY state politics, but my understanding is that he attempted to strong arm the legislature, and didn't hesitate to run over anyone getting in his way [i]even if they belonged to his political party[/i]. This has nothing to do with the Patriot act. Any deposit or withdrawal over $10,000 get reported and this has been the case for the last 25 years (long before the Patriot Act). If anything they should probably adjust the amount for inflation and up it to $25,000. The thinking is that it may also be involved with his campaign accounts. A Governor or a State Attorney General does not have that kind of money to throw around. He has been in relatively low paying government jobs and could not possibly be able to afford the type of women he has spent money on. That is the red flag that got this dumb a** under the microscope for being stupid. He needs to go to jail for stupidity not for prostitution.

Section 312 Mandates establishment of due diligence mechanisms to detect and report money laundering transactions through private banking accounts and correspondent accounts.
Section 314 requires cooperation among financial institutions, their regulatory authorities, and law enforcement authorities, with the specific purpose of encouraging sharing of information regarding individuals engaged in or reasonably suspected (based on credible evidence) of engaging in money laundering activities.
None of Spitzers transactions crossed the $10,000 threshold. The suspicions were rased by the pattern of transfers to the same recipient by a government official.
