Burner is a relative term. Even in the 90's you could be tracked with cell tower triangulation. In our hobby we're not worried about dea type tracking, we just don't want our names associated with a number. For extra safety you can disable all location services or have a rooted phone where you have full control over OS capability. Again, for our mild hobby activities an anonymous prepaid is fine. We are only talking about Brevard's finest here.

Of course, if LE really wanted to track you down, they could; but for this hobby they won't go to those lengths. My only point was to make fellow mongers aware of a good deal at Wal-Mart, and possibly educate some newbies on staying anomalous with a prepaid. We then have techie want to be driftwood1, who probably doesn't know an OS from his asshole, come along thinking that Jack Bauer and friends are going to track us via eye in the sky technology because we occasionally want to fuck a provider. I read a lot of affidavits for warrants as a side tangent part of my job and LE have a portal with the cell providers where with a warrant, they can pull down triangulation data on any number for any time. Smartphone or flip phone doesn't matter. It's tracking the cell signal. And smartphone vs. Flip phone doesn't matter. Google and Apple track your location data with a smartphone but that's a bear of a warrant to get them to comply with and simply not worth it when the triangulation data is a piece of cake. Assume if they want your burner location they can get it but why would they? They're not going to go get warrants to track a John's cell phone and try to build a case like that when as Camera3 said, they'll just do a sting and catch some guys red handed and have an easy case.

If you are really paranoid then don't turn your burner on in your home. Wait until you are safely away then turn it on and turn it off well before you get home. If you are properly using a pay as you go burner, then they will usually swap out SIM chips for a few $ and that will reset your identity.

Agree, we in the hobby are just looking to stay anonymous. Triangulation has been around since Marconi's days. That's not our worry. Now, I'm really done with this topic, besides I'm sure Wally World is now sold out anyway.
