I just wanted to update all those interested about the saga with the East Indian girl at work. Last week she introduced me to Jane, who she claimed was interested in me.

Tests of 1,829 prostitutes in three studies in New York City and in a national study in eight other areas found that 12 percent of those tested had the antibodies to the virus believed to cause acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and that most of those women were intravenous drug users.
An equally important finding is the scant evidence of female prostitutes' passing the AIDS virus to their customers. Two studies that tested 627 such men in New York City found only three cases in which the virus was thought likely to have been caught from a prostitute.
''I don't know of any proven cases'' of female prostitutes infecting clients, said Dr. William W. Darrow, an AIDS epidemiology official at the Federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Dr. Darrow oversees the Federal survey, which will soon begin recruiting male customers of prostitutes for testing.
Researchers believe that the sharing of contaminated needles to inject drugs - not sexual contacts with multiple partners - is the main source of AIDS among prostitutes. In the Federal study, researchers found a high correlation between drug use and AIDS; 80 percent of the infected prostitutes said they used drugs or had visible needle tracks. Lower Infection Rates
''The major risk factors for prostitutes are being intravenous drug users, or sex partners of drug users,'' said Dr. Rand Stoneburner, the New York City Health Department's director of AIDS research.
Although health officials are still concerned about AIDS among prostitutes, some had feared the problem was greater than the latest studies show, in light of the frequent sexual contacts by prostitutes and their exposure to sexually transmitted diseases. Indeed, the AIDS infection rates for prostitutes are lower than for other groups regarded as being at high risk. Some surveys of homosexual men and intravenous drug addicts have found 50 percent or more to be infected.
Researchers are uncertain why more prostitutes do not seem to be infected, a question that reflects the larger mystery of why sexual transmission of AIDS has been so much lower among heterosexuals than homosexuals in this country.
The researchers note that the findings seem to reflect the national rate of heterosexual transmission, which is lower than in Africa and the Caribbean. In Kenya, for example, a recent study of 1,000 prostitutes in Nairobi found that 85 percent were infected with the AIDS virus. Most heterosexual AIDS cases in this country occur among women having intercourse with needle-using men and among immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean. Condoms Required
Another crucial factor may be in the sexual practices of prostitutes. Most say that they require customers to use condoms, researchers say, and that the customers' most frequent request is to perform oral sex. Unlike anal and vaginal intercourse, oral sex has not been proved to be a frequent mode of AIDS transmission.
No firm statistics exist on the number of female prostitutes in the nation or how many men patronize them. In New York City, the police last year recorded 14,930 prostitution-related arrests. Some were undoubtedly repeat offenders, but many prostitutes go undetected by law enforcers. Each prostitute may have hundreds or even thousands of sexual contacts in a year.
Since the early years of the AIDS epidemic, prostitutes and their customers have been considered a special risk group. Both are on the list of those barred from donating blood for transfusions.
Health officials have viewed AIDS among prostitutes as an indicator of heterosexual transmission, and as a point for prevention efforts. Analogy to Gay Men
''It is likely that those heterosexuals with the largest numbers of anonymous partners would be most likely to be exposed'' to the AIDS virus, Dr. Mindell Siedlin, of New York University, wrote in reporting on her study of prostitutes in the current issue of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. She wrote that prostitutes could be analogous to gay men who have many sex partners, a group that was the first among homosexuals to get AIDS.
Prostitutes have also been targets of mandatory testing efforts. At least 13 states have enacted legislation to test convicted prostitutes for the AIDS virus, and Colorado provides for testing upon arrest, before trial, according to Mona J. Rowe at the AIDS Policy Center of the Intergovernmental Health Policy Project at George Washington University.
Striking contrasts emerged in the profile of AIDS infection among different groups of prostitutes. Rates varied widely between call girls and streetwalkers, for example, and according to geographic location. Geographic Differences
Only 1 of 78 call girls and other high-priced prostitutes in a recent New York City study was infected, and she was one of four women in that group who had shared needles. But two samples of streetwalkers and other prostitutes of low socio-economic status in New York City had infection rates of 9 and 21 percent.
''Geographically, there are huge differences,'' said Dr. Darrow. The worst AIDS pocket was in northern New Jersey, including Newark, Jersey City and Paterson. Forty-nine percent of the 168 women tested there were infected, and most of the infected were intravenous drug users.
The lowest infection rate - zero in a sample of 37 - was recorded in southern Nevada, where prostitution is legal and regulated. Screening of prostitutes by health officials there yielded only about five AIDS infections out of more than a thousand tests, Dr. Darrow said.
Joyce I. Wallace, a doctor who uses a van to recruit Manhattan streetwalkers for testing and who also tests their customers, said that about 9 percent of 199 prostitutes she examined were infected, again mostly admitted drug users. #21 Percent Positive The areas in the Federal survey were southern Nevada, Colorado Springs, Atlanta, Miami/Dade County, northern New Jersey, southern New Jersey, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In that survey, 188 of 1,486 prostitutes, or 13 percent, tested positive for the AIDS virus. Slightly more than half the group, 757, acknowledged or showed signs of drug use. Of them, 150 tested positive for the AIDS virus - a rate of 21 percent.
But among the remaining 729 who denied injecting drugs and had no signs of drug use, only 38, or 5 percent, were infected. Some of those said they knew or believed that their sex partners were intravenous drug users. ''The drug factor is clear - the infection rate is four times higher,'' said Dr. Darrow.
Rather than being disease spreaders, prostitutes are more likely to get AIDS than to give it, the studies indicate. ''The problem out there is the customer, not the prostitute,'' said Arlene Carmen, who runs a counseling program for prostitutes at Judson Memorial Church in Manhattan. Hundreds of Contacts
''People assume men in the general population are getting it from prostitutes, but that doesn't seem to be common,'' said Dr. Wallace. Of the 340 men she tested who patronized prostitutes, only eight were infected. Upon repeated interviews, several of these eight acknowledged having engaged in other forms of high-risk activity, like using intravenous drugs and having sex with men.
Only three insisted that their only possible exposure to AIDS was through sex with prostitutes. Those three averaged a total of 300 such contacts with prostitutes, about triple the average for uninfected customers. The three also said they did not use condoms, while 38 percent of the uninfected customers said they did.
The men who were the subjects of the various studies were voluntary participants, some of them recruited through information passed on by prostitutes.
A new phenomenon that has not been comprehensively studied is sex-for-drugs, involving women addicted to crack who agree to have sex with dealers inside drug dens in exchange for crack. The suppliers are often users or former users of intravenous drugs and may be transmitting the AIDS virus.
AIDS has made conventional prostitutes more careful, however. Dr. Mindlin's study of 78 high-priced prostitutes found 82 percent said they required customers to use condoms, at least sometimes.
Tracy Quan, a writer and former prostitute in New York, said: ''Educating men about AIDS has just become another part of the job. It's always been part of the job to protect yourself and the rest of society from disease.''
Prostitutes take AIDS seriously, Dr. Darrow said. ''They don't want to get infected or infect their babies. They have a high birth rate,'' he said. ''I haven't run into any prostitutes who are cavalier about this. They care whether they live or die.''
