Everyone is different. I tend to think in analogy, so here's my take. I see the hobby as similar to eating out. I've got a wife at home who is a mediocre cook with a limited menu (both literally and figuratively, unfortunately). Eating at home is a known quantity, is safe, comfortable, and most significantly, socially acceptable! But after twenty years of burnt toast, under-spiced, and nearly tasteless food, in an establishment that is becoming less attractive every day, eating out has become a much more desirable option.

Once I've decided that I'm eating out, there is absolutely no reason to go to a place where either the food or service is bad! However, regardless of the food and service, the appearance of the restaurant has to meet certain personal standards before I'll even consider eating there regardless of how good I've heard the food and / or service is. They may be the best ribs in the state, but if they're served out of a crack house in a rough part of town, I'm simply going to accept that I'll never experience the best ribs in the state! Besides, for me, the ambiance of the restaurant really compliments the food and plays a significant part in the quality of the overall experience.

Of course, the food, service, and appearance of the restaurant all have to meet certain standards for the experience to be good, and I fully agree that exceptional food and service can make up for a lot of unattractiveness of the establishment. Of course the opposite is true as well. An exceptionally attractive and somewhat exclusive restaurant can be spoiled beyond saving by bad food or service, and the overall experience, for me, at least, is also unsatisfactory. I recently had such a dining experience and reported it here.

My situation is that I don't have to eat out. I really believe that I shouldn't have to eat out, but the options at home really aren't appealing to me anymore so I treat myself regularly. Since I'm treating myself, there is absolutely no reason for me to walk into a restaurant whose looks don't appeal to me. If I'm paying to eat out, I have the right to be choosy and expect a pleasurable experience.

I can see the other side, too. If a restaurant were opened specifically for me, and I choose not to partake, its only fair to consider giving a cancellation fee. But the reality is, restaurants are normally open and serving food. That's what they do. (Maybe an idea for a Geico commercial? Or maybe I watch too much TV!) If I don't already know exactly what sort of experience to expect, I'm not going to show up after hours.

One could make the argument that there are very few 3 star and better restaurants in town right now and so us hungry guys have to settle for what's available. A seller's market, so to speak. But there is so much false advertising going on that diners simply have no idea what to expect until actually arriving at the restaurant! That's the value of this forum, to provide "Restaurant Reviews" to help fellow diners know what the restaurant is really like before arriving so we're better able to find that optimal combination of attractiveness, food, and service, and have a much better experience on those "special occasions" when we pony-up hard-earned resources to "dine out. ".

I love trying new places. Trying something new is always exciting. Thankfully, since discovering this forum, I've been able to become a regular at several favorite eateries while significantly reducing the disappointment of trying new places that falsely advertise or offer sub-par food / service, or both. For that reason, being a member of this forum is definitely a privilege!

I agree with NeverRest's report. In the two years I've been hobbying, I've been with 51 ladies, 28 of whom are Huntsville-area based (others in Nashville, Chattanooga, and spread out during my business travels). Cindy may not be exactly what everyone is after. There are definitely freakier ladies out there, younger ladies out there, prettier ladies out there. Maybe. But when you account for her wholesomely beautiful features, fit, tanned, toned, and completely natural body, class, dignified self confidence, maturity, and what appears to be a sincere, caring nature, the result is an amazing lady that seems to have no equal.
