I work for a university in the area. It's considered a liberal institution, but believe me, they squeeze their employees as much as any regular business. I've been trying to move up in the organization, and was putting in 60-hour weeks for as long as I can remember. This past year I told my department that I'd had enough. That I needed to get off the treadmill. They didn't take me seriously, and there was always a bit of disrespect for the work I did. Two months ago I decided it was time to act, and sent out my resume to a couple of jobs (within the univ.) that were 2 to 3 steps below my current level. They were also union jobs (this is not a critique / promotion of unions), and they were strictly 40-hour work weeks. No late nights and no weekends. I am now working one of those jobs, and am happy. I took a big pay cut, but my hourly rate went up. And I have my life back.
I have also been married for 30+ years. That was another change I made. Although I still live with my wife (I sleep in the basement), she and I are done. Not many of my family / friends know about this, but I will eventually make a clean break from her. Like my work situation, it took a while for me to realize she wasn't working for me either. She didn't have my best interests in mind, and there was no intimacy. She thought she could continue to squeeze and I would just continue to take it. She thought that this was going to be our life, till death (most likely mine) do us part. Well that shit has all stopped now. Better late than never.
Long story short, You Only Live Once. I don't believe in heaven or hell or any of that other BS. So my advice to all is that if it isn't working for you Get The Fuck Out. So true. I've been at the new job 3 weeks, and it's like a weight has been lifted off me. I'm doing and making plans to do things I was only dreaming about in my old job. It's actually enjoyable to do tasks around the house that need to get done. And I don't have to feel guilty about not spending my Sundays preparing for Mondays. I noted your suggestion for the NYC providers, but $320 is a bit out of my range. I'll consider it and possibly treat myself one of these coming months.
