However when leaving the US you'd better make sure the pills are legit and in a properly filled prescription bottle under your real name, which needs to match your passport. If not, you can be arrested on the spot for illegal traffic of a controlled substance. I don't speak from personal experience but from that of a good friend who travels to South America frequently out of Atlanta.
