Internet played role in prostitution raids

Web sites that give detailed information about where to find illicit sex for sale in South Carolina played a role in raids of suspected houses of prostitution in Lexington County earlier this year, law enforcement officials said.

Do a Google search for Brook’s Haven, which Lexington County officials allege was a house of prostitution but billed itself as an “aromatherapy” and “soft massage” center. One of the items that comes up is a listing about the now-defunct business on a “sex guide” Web site.

The site chronicled the evolution of Brook’s Haven and also described its demise within hours of the Jan. 13 raid. The site also kept visitors aware of the subsequent raids at Atlantis II and LMR (Le Masser Rendezvous) on prostitution charges on Feb. 15.

“We were alerted to the information on these sites by various people,” Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said. “A lot of the information we were able to get by monitoring the sites tended to be a benefit to the investigation.”

The sex-guide site, one of the most comprehensive of many similar ones on the Web, features dozens of forums frequented by people — all posting under nicknames or screen names — who discuss where to find prostitutes, houses of prostitution and other businesses that offer sex acts for a price.

A recent post by a man describing his observations of Myrtle Beach in early April: “Looks like the girls may be coming out of hibernation for the golf season.”

The forums are divided by location. South Carolina has thousands of posts to forums dedicated to Columbia, Bennettsville, Myrtle Beach, Orangeburg, Charleston, the Upstate and other areas.

“She says she walks the area quite often,” reads one post by a man describing a prostitute he met off Broad River Road in Columbia.

People who post messages on the forums use an intricate glossary of abbreviations to describe different sex acts, locations and prostitutes they encounter. About the only names on the site that are identifiable are those of businesses.

Internet sites that cater to prostitutes and their customers are only a small part of the Web traffic investigated annually by the S.C. Computer Crimes Center, said Capt. Chip Johnson of the State Law Enforcement Division.

The center is operated through a partnership of SLED, the U.S. Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Johnson is aware of sites like the one that mentioned Brook’s Haven, but he could not comment on specific investigations related to the sites. He also could not comment on the techniques the SLED center uses when looking into sex guides and similar Web sites.

Investigators with the center work with local law enforcement agencies in the state that request assistance in investigating crimes involving the Internet. Johnson said the investigations range from cases of computer hacking and identity theft to tracking down predators who stalk children on the Internet.

Johnson, who has been with the center since it was formed in 1999, said the array of illicit activities that can be found on the Web evolves almost daily.

“There are so many good things about the technology that’s out there, but once it’s out there, you can’t control what somebody does with it,” Johnson said.

“The only avenue that controls some of the people on the Internet is their imagination.”
