I use a 5 megapixel camera with a 5x zoom. I think anything over 3 megapixels is fine for posting so use your budget to try to get the largest OPTICAL zoom you can. When I bought mine several months ago there were some 12x zooms out which were coming down in price. That would be awesome to be able to snap photos so far away the sw could not see what you were doing. Its still kinda tricky with a 5x zoom. Also, some zoom cameras have a larger profile and the lens really pokes out when zooming. With those, its hard to be subtle when trying to snap a photo of a sw looking your way.

There are lots of free software programs which allow you to use a digital zoom and crop the photos (to remove other people, cars etc which are in the photo) and resize them for uploading. Its not difficult after you play around with it for a while. I'm linking some prior posts which helped me.

Other than Jackson's rules, there are no rules about how to post the photos. I like to post the best photo or two of a sw and I try to crop out any person or auto which gets in the picture. Several years ago, a monger posted a photo on ecb which had a sw approaching MY car. I was not concerned regarding LE because that's not proof of anything but he was cool and removed the photo when I sent him a message. A crop job is easy and avoids implicating anyone or some poor slob that happens to get in the photos. Also, a bunch of photos of the same girl is not as helpful, but hell, we'll all still look at them. Good luck.

The higher the megapixel of the image, the sharper the image will turn out, but you have to set the camera to the highest resolution before taking the picture. A lower resolution settings allows you to store more photos, but lessen the sharpness of the image. The advantage with setting the camera to the highest resolution when taking the picture is that it allows you to digital zoom “in” and still keep the image relatively sharp as compared to zooming “in” the same amount with lower resolution photos. With the lower resolution photos, if you zoom in, the quality (sharpness) suffers and if you zoom in too much, you will start getting pixelation. (the little square blocks that start showing up)

There are other factors involved like shutter speed, lighting, focus etc, but if you set the camera to auto, these are normally not an issue. Holding the camera steady while taking the picture is also important in the quality of the picture you take.

So, go for a camera with at least 3 Megapixel capacity. The more the better and go for the highest optical zoom you can find. Use only the optical zoom when taking a picture since you can always use digital zoom anytime afterwards. I say this because I am under the impression/understanding that some cameras allow you to use the digital zoom feature before the photo is taken, but I could be wrong. I don’t see how it can be done, but I am not an expert with cameras either.

Then you also need to practice to get familiar with whatever camera you buy. Don’t do what I do sometimes with my small and compact 5 megapixels Sony DSC-T1 ( size of a deck of cards). I keep forgetting and end up putting my finger slightly in front and close to the lens while holding it. I get the flash light reflection off the tip of my finger and it screws up the image big time.

I've been stuck with a few school groups to various OC kid attractions this week, so today (Saturday) is the first time that I will be out and about since last week. Planned scan is around San Diego and Nasty City this afternoon and evening.

I do some stuff on eBay and there is a free program available called Powertoys (I can't remember if it is a Microsoft product or someone wrote it to work with Microsoft products) but use a search engine with the keywords "image resizing" and then find the one that mentions powertoys.

Takes about 30 seconds to download and very easy to use: right click on your image (even when in the Windows picture viewer mode) a small menu comes up, click on resize and then choose the size and click OK. Creates a second file of the size you want to use.

Gotta get a good camera for mongering. I have some great 35mm equipment that would take great pictures at quite a distance, but it's a little obvious when in use.

One of my friends from the Midwest is (IMHO) trying to be a vigilante, he rigged his car with 4 digital cameras and used those small 5" TV's as monitors. I've seen his shots, he takes pictures of suspected gang members and graffiti, if I had the cash I'd set up the monger vehicle the same way.
