There used to be a plethora of quality providers back when there were a couple local boards. It's gotten so bad I just don't even waste my money in the US. I save and travel for my mongering. It's infinitely better and SO worth it. Unfortunately it doesn't seem I'll be able to travel for a while.

I have both. I added a phone app to my burner phone.

Smart TracFone for 39 at dollar general. Offers 1000 text for 5 bucks. I rarely use them up because I often use the phone app with WiFi.

Bought a 32 bit card to put all my pictures on.

It's my 4th burner phone and I won't need to upgrade again.
Fb and messanger are already loaded on the phone. Plenty of room for everything you need with the 32 bit chip. I don't need to use my laptop anymore.
When WiFi is not available, talk and text are reasonable rates and I never use my data. Anytime I need data it can wait until I get to WiFi.
Text on this phone will not send pics or anything but text. Having Text now app allows transfer of data or pics when WiFi is available. I reload service for 20 bucks every 3 months.

A texting app on your personal phone may be suspicious. Do you use a family App Store / Play account where a tech savvy spouse may see that someone has downloaded the app? Likewise are YOU savvy enough to bury it deep within a folder to keep it out of sight and remember to disable notifications? Similarly if you got a burner phone where would you charge and hide it? If you aren't married those probably aren't a concern for you.

A good reason to have a burner phone: you can afford to bring it with you where you shouldn't be bringing your expensive smart phone. Say hello to souvenir pics!

If you consider an app, download it and try it for free. Learn all the settings within the app and your phone to enable / disable notifications. Send texts and calls (from a different phone) in all the different configurations, sleep modes, etc to see when it rings or notifies you so there aren't any surprises when you aren't expecting any. Then remember to shut it off when not in use.

For the overly paranoid TextFree has a webpage version for texting only. It requires you to login via a browser and manually check for texts. Cumbersome but leaves no trace.
