IMHO being an asshole to them certainly can trigger worse vs. Better behaviour towards you. You do you but for me I do my best to be the "nice guy" that maybe they don't want to blackmail or otherwise f over. But in the end I cannot control their behavior.

I just had a 7 month arrangement with essentially no problems whatsoever come to an end. Everything was going perfectly fine and all of a sudden she blocked me. I found a way to contact her to try and get an explanation of why she did that and what I might have done wrong. I told her if she no longer wanted to see me that is fine just be an adult about and say so instead of just essentially erasing me from her life. They will blocked you so you don't contact them, but when they single or when they desperate for money. They will hit you up again since that's what we are to them no matter how many years we know them and help them out. Its all about the Benjamin to them.
Yes, even the best ones will flip on you or surprise you in some unexpected manner to put you in harm's way. Which is why I made a decision some time ago to never repeat. I will say that when they decide to cut it off they don't owe us any explanations, just like we don't own them a reason when we decide to move on. In this case, I would argue that you're the one who failed to be an adult and move on. I know it's hard and no one likes to feel rejected, which is why I pull the plug early when it hurts the least.
