Rental car companies can track vehicles routes with GPS. But like Lex said, I think they rely on triggers. They will then investigate further, otherwise they won't pay too much attention to where you go with the car. I've rented cars with limited range where only certain states were covered by the rental agreement. The reason I was given is that they don't have affiliates/franchises in those states to take care of any service calls should you run into any vehicle problems. I think it's too much of a problem and expense for them to take care of vehicles in states where they have no agreements or contracts.
There was a case back east a while back where the rental car company fined a guy mucho bucks when he rented one of there cars, because he went past the speed limit. Yes, the company was tracking the speed of the vehicle and took it upon themselves to administer justice. They ticketed the guy for every time he went over the posted speed limit, a bunch of tickets. The guy took them to court and sued them. I don't know the final outcome, but the consensus was that the rental care had no business of acting as a law enforcement agency to go around issuing tickets. The nerve of the agency. Not even the Wizard of Oz would issue such nerves to anyone.
There many be other reasons why not all states are covered by rental agreements. I don't know all the reasons for why rental cars limit coverage to certain states. "Dollar' rental won't cover Texas as of last year, at least not where I rent from. Maybe the place where I rent is an independent agency and wont' go to the added expense. I don't know.
In anycase, why go to all the trouble of installings a transponder on a vehicle to track your wife or girlfriend.
Just buy her some "Forget Me Not" GPS tracking panties, that some Japanese came out with about a year ago. :)

Thanks for chiming in. I could not have said it better myself. Some of the recent posts have been antagonistic and negative. But I did not know where to start in my criticism.
You are right. Most of the time when people post about SW's, the info seems to be of very limited value. Even if these morons were able to provide distinct and accurate information, what good would it do? We have SW's here where I live so I think I have some insight into what that world is like.
