We're now past the statistic of 1 american citizen out of every thousand has died from complications due to covid. While that may sound trivial to the 99 percenters in this crowd, just think about it. Now past 350,000 dead and counting.

And yes, I wear a medical mask. I understand the shortcomings of cloth. But I wear the fucking mask, it's not that great of an inconvenience. You want inconvenience? My parents were part of the greatest generation and my dad fought in WWII. During that war, due to limited supply of fucking everything, gas was rationed, electricity was shut off at night very often (but mostly on the coasts), meat was rationed, you name it. And virtually no one bitched about it. Why? Because while they had to wait in line for 2 hours to get gas, their loved ones. Husbands, fathers, sons, were half a world away putting their lives on the line to preserve our RIGHT to wait in line for 2 hours to get gas.

So, why don't all of you bitching about the fucking inconvenience of wearing a fucking mask when you go grocery shopping man up and grow a pair and stop making something so harmless a political thing. If my dad were still around, I'm pretty sure the last thing he'd * about was putting on a mask when he went to the drugstore to buy smokes and beer.

Look at the thousands of doctors who have also spoken into these same topics and make an educated decision on what is best for you. This number is getting better over time. It was around 3% early in the pandemic. Doctors are learning better how to treat this. Any benefits have NOT accrued from any new medical treatments, just the tried and true, like corticosteroids.

Back when the rate was 3% I offered this analogy. Getting an infection is like spinning a roulette wheel in Vegas. If you land on any red or black number, you're good. If you hit a green 0, the croupier takes out a pistol and shoots you dead. How many people would play that game?

Another fascinating fact from that page, a country that normally has 40,000 deaths due to influenza every year and in some years as many as 80,000 had less than 7,000 last year. When questioned the answer we get is "it's because of the covid mitigation, but when asked about covid then Americans are "The WORST in the world" so apparently we did a great job with influenza but a shut job with covid. But we aren't supposed to ask any questions about this because we aren't epidemiologists.

Here's a little bit more info about the effectiveness of all social distancing / disease transmission measures, of which masks are a prominent element. It's interesting, there were lots of people saying that the US should do what Sweden was doing. I'd say that the combination of lack of compliance of US residents with the recommended measures has delivered an outcome that is quite comparable to Sweden's. One thing they did that we didn't, they let their schools stay open, but I'd guess we were more liberal in other areas.

The other two examples I show, Canada and South Korea, show what is possible when people adhere to public health recommendations. Undoubtedly, this included mask wearing. Note that these are rates based on the different populations, so they are fully comparable. This data came from the Financial Times website, it is free to all to access. You can get facts there and make your own judgment of how well we've done.

The only thing that will lead to that is the majority of the population becoming immune. Slowing the spread was to minimize deaths until a vaccine could be made. Thankfully, we are now there, we just have to get it into people. Before that, the only way to get people immune would be to infect them, and at the death rate we have seen, that would mean 6 million people dying from the pandemic in the US. It's still a lot.

Let's not forget that plenty of people get over the virus completely, but there are a number of people who have long-term health consequences (and these don't seem to be related to any other health risk.

Concerning 'causes of death', those people with diabetes wouldn't have died if they didn't get the virus. IDK why you would exclude them from the statistics. Plenty of people have all of those conditions mentioned, and live long lives. But if you have them you can die even if you are 40 years old, or 20. The Financial Times has a different take on this idea, the concept of excess deaths. There are a usual number of deaths in a political jurisdiction that are consistent year after year. When there is a spike in death, you can pretty easily attribute that to the pandemic, and you don't have to worry about testing, etc.

Regarding our flu season, I thought all along that it would be much better this year than in the past, simply because of the precautions being taken to prevent coronavirus transmission. This has flummoxed some in the media, claiming we were hoodwinked about flu being worse rather than better. The key difference, is that flu is far far less deadly than coronavirus because the virus family is endemic and at least some immunity is throughout the population. Social distancing cut its transmission, so the deaths from flu really dropped a lot. The fact that public health measures didn't do a great job on coronavirus is reflective of their imperfect observance. The history in other countries that adhered more closely to these measures shows that.

It looks like the corona discussion is here, so here's my 2 cents. I'm not saying there's not a virus running around. I don't believe the numbers being published by the media and government.

Davidson counties estimated population for 2019 by the census bureau was 694,000 people. Today the health department published total tests conducted at 817,000. Over 100 k of the population. So how many tests are retests? What percentage of retests are positive and negative? How many tests specimens are coming from the 3 testing centers against private?

The non elected health board is controlling this county with no transparency in the numbers and facts in testing and reporting. The death reports say died with a positive test of covid but don't give any other information. The medical examiner in grant county Colorado had 2 gunshot deaths that was listed as covid. How long is the economy going to be stifled by some virus that has been around now for a year?

So, before this very recent roll out of the vaccine, the people around the elderly in nursing homes the most were the staff. Who are these people? They're young and not particularly qualified workers, not nurses for sure. There is maybe one real nurse and one real doctor around most of the time. The whole point of the nursing home is they're not hospitals and are so much cheaper. The nursing home workers are likely making minimum wage, and to make a living on that, they have multiple jobs, at multiple nursing homes. So, even if they weren't going to even get sick or die from the disease, they could (and did) definitely transmit it from one patient and one home to another. There are lots of reasons to wear a mask, of course you are correct, alone in one's car or at home, they are useless.

They went through every bit of regulatory approval required, because it was in the hands of the FDA and the CDC. It is true it was record time, but that was because 1) the new technology is very much amenable to that and 2) manufacturing was proceeding before efficacy was proved. These companies were working on this vaccine well before there was Operation Warp Speed. The technology has been in development for decades. I don't think Trump will get the Nobel Prize in Medicine for this.
