But if you do not have that situation global entry is the way to go.

Global Entry: US citizens and Green card holders.
Sentri: Visa Holders and whoever else is eligible for GE.

If you have SENTRI or GE it doesn't matter whaat time you cross back to the US. The wait time will always be minimal. There's several "Border Wait Time" apps. There are big differences.
GE, $100 for 5 years, enables expedited into the US through LAND, AIR, SEA; SENTRI is only for land entry from Mexico, just like NEXUS is only for land entry from Canada. Coning back from notoriously risky Colombia to LAX this year, it took me only 1 minute in front of the GE machine to clear Imm. The machine read the card RFID, took photo and did facial recognition without me taking the card out of my wallet. I was the only passenger with GE. Meanwhile a couple hundreds passengers had to wait in long lines.
GE does allow register of cars. , as many as you want It's free if registered at time of application; afterwards, each car costs $42. SENTRI also registers cars. Cannot drive unregistered cars across or you will likely face penalties.
With both GE and SENTRI, all passengers have to be approved and registered with each program for the privilege. I have been dropping off non-GE guys at the gate while I drive across.

I have lucked out for years. I live up North and have Nexus. For the last 7 years or so I have used my Nexus card coming back to USA via San Ysidro at least 2 per year. The agents never gave me any grief why I am crossing with Nexus instead of Sentri or GE.
Got my global entry card so went to tj Friday evening around 8 or 9 pm.
Parked in the paid lot close to pedeast. A few people ahead of me but no line. Maybe a 20-30 sec wait at the bag scan part.
