It's pretty much exactly as you think it is. One person writing dozens of ads per week and stringing guys along until they pay up, then mysteriously disappearing.
He described how they treated someone that caught on to the scam as well. The guy sent out hundreds of messages to guys warning about the scam. When they found out about him, they locked him out of his account then used it to send random crazy paranoid and racist rantings to make it look like the guy was nuts.
If you want a funny test, signup, don't fill out a profile or fill it out such that no actual human being would respond and see how much "interest" you get. It's pretty illuminating on how some of these hucksters work.
Of course, with that said, there are some "legitimate" sugar daddy sites that are glorified pimps that are getting a ton of traffic from college age girls trying to get through college. Those tend to have a lot more strict controls on the guys that sign up though, particularly on income and criminal checks.
So I signed up for SA site. Found three local girls that I know very well. Hooked up with one last year just at a bar. Not on a pay for play basis mind you.
So here is the question. Should I contact these chicks. I have a damn good feeling that they are legit on the site and not stolen FB pics. Only thing is it hits very fucking close to home. Hmmmmm

Not necessarily in that order but the combination has to be there or I am not interested. Just like anything else in life I suppose and we all have our methods of valuing both.

If there is more risk that it affects your personal life (friends, family, etc.) then I would stay away.

I have had several long term SB over the last 1/2 doz years. Its like anything else. You have to stay on top of it if you care about them messing around. Always ck other sites to see if they are going behind your back. Etc. That is if you care. I always made it clear that it was to be monogamus. As in we would be tested and then condoms were not needed. It takes alot of time to find a good one though. First lasted about 1 yr. Another about 1. 5 yrs and another 3 yrs. Still going actually. A couple others less than a year. I'm a decent looking guy. Just not a lot of time for a traditional situation and did not want the full emotional situation. But did have to have some connection. I found 2 off the old mojo. CL. That took allllllloooooot of work. And BP. And seeking arrangement. And sugar daddy for you. They all have scammers. First rule. Never. As in without exception send money without meeting. Rule 2. Never give more than like a $25 gas card on a first meeting. If they want more. Then they are scamming. I made contact with one of them. I know her fairly well in real life and fucked her a couple years ago. Said she was good to go for 150 a pop. I'll consider it but may just have to sit back and realize that it's best if I don't. Damn, there is something about just knowing now though.

It was a very interesting site. Several of her posts gave me a laugh. I would agree, go to her first posts back in 2007 (I think 2007) because as she posts, she assumes you are fimiliar with her past posts.
