13 Suspects Arrested In Valley Prostitution Sting

(CBS) VAN NUYS, Calif. A prostitution sting netted 13 suspects in Van Nuys overnight, including a pair of youths who robbed a man in front of undercover officers, police said.
Undercover female officers posed as prostitutes in the area of Sepulveda Boulevard and Sherman Way, according to Los Angeles police Sgt. Rolando Solano of the Van Nuys Station.
"The Sepulveda corridor has just been a notorious prostitution track for the past 30 years," Solano said.
Eleven "johns" were arrested on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute, Solano said. One man with some methamphetamine in a pocket will face drug charges as well, he said.
While the sting was in progress, two boys robbed a man of his cane, a Walkman-style tape player and a soda, Solano said. The officers called in a black-and-white unit, and arrested the youths, he said.
"Kind of a different twist to the prostitution sting," Solano said.
Police also impounded seven vehicles that were being driven by the johns, he said.
Rather than just towing the vehicles and allowing suspects to pay a couple of hundred dollars to get them back, police now will impound cars driven by "johns" for up to 30 days, Solano said.
The City Attorney's Office, which prosecutes all misdemeanors in the city, can order those convicted of prostitution-related crimes to pay a percentage of the vehicle's value to get it back.
After three arrests, the john has to pay the vehicle's full value, Solano said.
"And if he doesn't want to, that's OK -- we just auction it off and the proceeds go into the city's general fund, to fill potholes and such," Solano said.
The Los Angeles ordinance providing for impounds is modeled on one in Oakland, which enables police to seize vehicles used in "annoyance crimes," such as prostitution and drug dealing, Solano said.
The Sepulveda corridor has a long history of prostitution, Solano said. Because prostitutes in the San Fernando Valley would work for less money than their Hollywood counterparts, `johns' were attracted to the area, he said.
Prostitution is far from a victimless crime, Solano said. Area residents are plagued by related crimes and lower property values, he said.
"The pimps here are basically a bunch of former gangsters who have figured out that they can make more with four girls than by sticking a gun in someone's face," Solano said. "But when the girls aren't bringing in enough money, they're still fine with sticking a gun in someone's face."
In addition, the prostitutes themselves are also often the victims of abuse and are at a high risk for disease, Solano said.
Solano characterized pimps as "masters of manipulation" who provide their girls with food and shelter, but little else.
"Occasionally they'll get to go out for a shopping spree, or for the young ones, maybe a trip to Disneyland as a treat," Solano said.

Although I know SB is dead, I thought I'd cruise through around midnight on Monday. Only found one BSW way south of Denny's, but I've found gems there before.
