The app is free, requires no buying of minutes (though there area few where you'll need to if you make calls), no needing to hide another phone, you can change numbers often and you won't misplace it for your infrequent use in the hobby. The only downside is dealing with ads unless you pay for the app.

I don't mean to be cheap, but that seems extreme for a a couple of phone calls and a couple dozen texts per month. Can anyone get specific with models, carriers / plans and costs?

I'd like to stop using my personal phone for hobbying.
