That's why a Chinese person can read Japanese Kanji and understand it and vice versa. However, in Japanese there are also hiragana and katana which Chinese don't have so they don't know how to read it.

However, simplified Japanese Kanji (shinjitai) and simplified Chinese characters can be written differently and have different translation.

I'm native Japanese and I can read and write both traditional kanji and shinjitai. I can basically read and understand traditional Chinese characters too (not simplified) although some strokes are comparatively different. I don't know any Chinese people so I really can't speak for them but I would assume that they could generally understand traditional Japanese kanji but not so sure about shinjitai.
