Condoms are very effective at preventing the transmission of HSV-2 from men to women, but are less effective at protecting men from transmission from a HSV-2 positive female partner. This is because the male is typically exposed to a substantial amount of fluid / vaginal secretions from the female partner that contact areas of the male not covered by the condom. I did a quick google search and saw one study that indicated a 95% protection rate for women vs. 65% for men. So the difference is significant. But condoms definitely do offer a substantial protection benefit vs unprotected sex. Still, I'm sure that stat is eye opening for a lot of people because 65% really isn't that good when you're talking about exposure to an incurable disease that has considerable social stigma attached.

Overall, that was a helpful post and shed some good light on the risks associated with HSV-2. You guys stay safe out there.

A great corollary to my post. I guess the point I was trying to make with the IgG test is that if you test positive consistently more than once, then you most like have herpes, but just because you test negatively consistently doesn't mean that you don't have it. The antibody test has a 19% false positive rate and a 38% false negative rate (from what I'm seeing), so you can still be infected but test negative for it a third of the time. The swab test is still the most accurate, but then again you need a blister to appear, which doesn't happen with most people who have the virus. I just don't want people to think they're clean if they test negative on the IgG test.

As to your second point, you're right as well. It's still safer to use a condom, and it reduces your risk, even if it's only by 65%. I don't want people to think, "I'm going to get herpes whether I wear a condom or not, so I might as well not wear one. " It still helps lessen your odds of catching it. My point on that one was just that condoms aren't going to completely prevent something that spreads by skin-to-skin contact. Whereas an infection like chlamydia infects you through your urethral opening, so using a condom will protect you against that more than it will against herpes.

But she does seem willing, can't host, and seems to have better availability earlier in the day before her schedule gets busy. She quoted $400 but in a way that said there was room for negotiations.
