Oxnard police announced late Friday evening the arrest of three suspects in connection with the Feb. 19 killing of an Oxnard massage parlor manager.
One of those arrested on Friday is Jose Ochoa of Oxnard. Ochoa has been in custody since Feb. 20 in connection with an attack at massage business in Oxnard two days before Sun Cha Kays, 59, was killed.
Kays died at a local hospital about 9 p.m. on Feb. 19 an hour after being found with a gunshot wound to the head at her A-1 Spa Massage Therapy on South C Street in Oxnard.
Ochoa, 26, was first arrested on Feb. 19 on an unrelated charge involving an assault at an Oxnard bar.
Ochoa posted bail and was arrested again Feb. 20 in connection with the Feb. 17 attack at the Tokyo Spa. Two women were viciously assaulted in the attack at the spa on Saviers Road. Authorities charged Ochoa with rape, robbery, kidnapping, burglary and other crimes in connection with the attack at the spa.
Oxnard police investigators said at the time that Ochoa also was a prime suspect in Kays’ killing two days later. Business documents list Kays as a part owner of the massage parlor at one point.
But it would take another 20 days for Ochoa to be arrested in connection with Kays’ killing. His arrest came at the Ventura County Jail where he has been in custody since Feb. 20.
Oxnard police also on Friday arrested Gabriel Lopez, 21, and a 17-year-old male, both of Oxnard in connection with the killing. Their arrests happened about 4 p.m. as detectives served arrest warrants on the suspects.
Police would not say what role they suspect each of the three allegedly played in Kays’ death, saying only that the case is still under investigation.
Lopez was taken to the Ventura County Jail, police said, while the 17-year-old was taken to Juvenile Hall.
Court documents state Ochoa admitted to firing a gun and causing a business owner’s death during a later robbery.
Ochoa already is charged with multiple counts of rape, forced oral copulation, kidnapping to commit another crime, robbery, false imprisonment by violence, and assault with a firearm. He also faces single counts of sodomy by force, making terrorist threats and burglary, according to Superior Court documents.
Inmate information on the Ventura County Sheriff’s Web site showed Ochoa was being held at County Jail on Friday on $5 million bail.
The Oxnard Police Department did not immediately notify the public about the attack at Tokyo spa.
Police officials said the attack at the Tokyo Spa appeared isolated and they felt that releasing information about the attack could do more harm than good as they sought those responsible for the crime.
Police spokesman David Keith said there had been no recent robberies or rapes at massage businesses in the city.
Publicizing the attack at the spa could alert the suspect, causing him to flee and making his arrest difficult if not impossible, Keith said.[/quote]
