Try going to UCLA or USC. UCLA is much better than USC in ranking, and a lot of times they charge less because you have a student doing the work. The students need the hours before they can graduate, so they give a good deal. I tried it once at USC and my mouth was a bloody mess for just a regular cleaning, but it saved me $150.

In So Cal, insurance rate for a root canal without cap is about $1,000. The lowest cash price is $500, just the root canal.
I emailed a number of dentistas in Tijuana. Their prices were comparable to So Cal's cash prices. I found Liberty Dental Clinic on Calle 2 near La Zona. They quoted $300 for a root canal but agreed on $200. The exchange rate then was 12:1 , so it was about 2,400 pesos.
I walked in Sat morning about 9 AM. They were able to start with me quickly. It was a nice and fairly clean clinic. There were 2 dentists, both around mid 40's, nice, personable, spoke English. He was competent and efficient with the root canal using a digital X-ray imaging machine, so he could check the tooth quickly a few times as he drilled down and extracted the pulp. He did a better and quicker job than my regular dentist as she has to wait for her assistant to develop the old X-ray films. I had no problem with his work.
Abe is the office manager. He speaks English. Try to work a deal in Pesos with him. They also prescribe and sell a package of an antibiotics and an opioid pain killer for about $20. Those meds were very harsh and probably unnecessary. I had no infection or pain. If you get infected buy some Azithromycin. If it hurts, buy some pain killers.

They had two levels of pricing, depending on type of implant and amount of space available on existing tooth. By no means did I feel like it was a hard sell or pushing me to get other stuff done, was just an honest report. I took the information to my regular dentist that I really trust and they were really surprised at the high quality of the hardware being used and thought the pricing was outstanding. I'm going to have the Tijuana dentist finished the work started by the OC dentist. It's a long, multi visit process to do it right. I just started right before Covid so I still have a ways to go.
