Craigslist to crack down on prostitution ads

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Under the watchful eye of law enforcement in 40 states, Craigslist pledged Thursday to crack down on ads for prostitution on its Web sites.
As part of Craigslist's agreement with attorneys general around the country, anyone who posts an "erotic services" ad will be required to provide a working phone number and pay a fee with a valid credit card. The Web site will provide that information to law enforcement if subpoenaed.
Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist's CEO, said the deal will allow legitimate escort services to continue advertising, while providing a strong disincentive to companies that are conducting illegal business.
"We don't view it as a penalty, we view it as raising the accountability," he said. "A legitimate business should have no problem with that. They should have no problem providing a phone number or credit card credentials."
Craigslist filed lawsuits this week against 14 software and Internet companies that help people who post erotic service ads to circumvent the Web site's defenses against inappropriate content and illegal activity.
Craigslist, which posts 30 million ads every month for everything from apartment rentals to jobs in hundreds of cities, will also begin using new search technology in an effort to help authorities find missing children and victims of human trafficking.
Police across the country have been arresting people for using Web sites like Craigslist to advertise the sexual services of women and children.
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who brokered the agreement, said his office contacted Craigslist after receiving several complaints from users late in 2007 about photographs depicting nudity on the site. He said Craigslist cooperated fully and there was never a need to threaten legal action against the company.
"The dark side of the Internet must be stopped from eclipsing its immense potential for good," Blumenthal said.
He added: "I am fully convinced that Craigslist wants to stop this activity as much as we do."
Buckmaster said the agreement does not cover Craigslist's personal ads, where prostitutes have been found advertising for "dates." But he said the San Francisco-based company has been working with authorities on that issue and on cutting down on the sale of stolen merchandise on its sites.
"We are experimenting with telephone verification in those sections," he said. "We don't have any plans to use credit card verification in that section currently. But this partnership is going to be active in that area as well, anywhere where crime does or could occur."
The agreement was joined by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
"The criminals engaged in the sexual trafficking of children no longer parade them on the streets of America's cities," said the center's chief executive, Ernie Allen. "Today, they market them via the Internet."

I must have had the worst luck this week. Misfortune seemed to come in increments instead of a full blown sheeet storm. So I didn't really realize that things went horribly wrong this week until I got home and reflected on what actually happened (no luck at all). First off, I've totally abandoned the SW scene but I enjoy the stroll (just to see what's out there). I go thru my usuall trolling area to check out the quality of talent. Very dry on the west side (GR / Tele). Maybe 2 WSW's, I'd say a 7 from behind but a 2 (or less) in the face. Why did I ever do SW's? Anyway, election day, I headed to work early, after getting my usual cup of coffee at T Ho's I proceeded to check the talent on Fenkell. Nothing at all. Reason being, people were lined up to vote a some middle school on Fenkel and Tele. It looked like thousands. If never seen a turnout that big. Back to my bad luck. With no SW's to look at I figured I might as well head into work. So, like I been doing for years, I make a right on red at Fenkel and Tele. I don't get 500 feet from the corner before I see the red flashing lights of uncle leo in my back window. I always like to chuckle at the people getting pulled over so I glanced around to see which victim I thought was getting pulled over by the Redford PD. They must make a mint at that corner. Redford is notorious for sitting there and getting anyone going 2 mph over the speed limit. Back to me. I didn't notice anyone going super fast in beside me but the flashing lights kept getting closer to my bumper. Sheeeet, I was getting pulled over! I was totally clean. It was in early morning for god's sake! AND I knew I wasn't speeding! Anyway's Barney Fife (with a gut and attitude) pulls me over and asks for my license and POI. I give it up with out a word and he asks me why I thought he pulled me over. Duh, I hadn't a clue. He proceeds to tell me that I made a right on red back a Fenkel and Tele. And? ! He goes on to say that theres a posted sign there now that prohibits that. DAMN! He goes back to his tricked out Charger to check my record, returns and 'sells' me the notion that since my record is so clean he'll just be giving me a ticket for impeding with no points. YIPPIE! $140. 00! Oh well. Back to more misfortune. Like most of you guys, I try to cultivate at least 1 or 2 regulars that I have a regular appointment with. Right now I only have 1 (2 if you count the SW that I frequent when the pickins are really bad, I can't believe she still calls me to hook up, WOW! ). OK, I show up at my regular's place for an early morning session and she's having Aunt Flow over for a visit and she's crampy. DAMN! I like the full treatment so DATY is definetly out of the question. So I leave her place and sulk for a few minutes, then consult the blackberry for some new talent. I figured Olga was closer so I called Chrystal back and cancelled. Traveled all the way back west and gave Olga a call. She also double booked and had a client in the parking lot. DAMN! She said she would call in about a half hour unless he wanted the full hour. Declined that offer and went back home with a raging boner. So guys moral of the story: nothing ever works out as expected, stick with the regulars, and most importantly if you've got an appointment and your on the way there don't cancel just because the one that just called is a little be closer.
