It's because people today are getting married much later in life (or not at all) which gives rise to more frequent sexual partners. Also, with young people waking away from organized religion (due to widespread scandals) and the rise of apps like Tinder stds can spread rapidly among common folk who often don't get tested and seem to only have sex in the state of drunkenness. We are living in the era of the hookup culture.
