I just do my due diligence a bit better before walking through the door. I don't like surprises. But I do have protection in the car just in case. But I never enter the room with a weapon of any kind. There's other ways to prepare and protect. One, I never carry valuables on me at all, except the donation and tip. Two, I carry a $30 pre paid throw away phone, with contacts and pictures backed up online. Don't carry ID. No wallet at all. No keys. My car key goes in a magnetic lock box under the car. At this point there ain't shit to steal.
Just a suggestion though.

Engaging in a criminal activity w / o carrying is just asking to be a victim. You are dealing with criminals, most who are armed and under the influence of drugs. IMHO it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
My only exception is when I'm dealing with the well reviewed provider who has a reputation to uphold. It seems to me that most providers in the area don't fit that criteria.
