I hesitated to bring this up until the recent conversation here. There has been a young, white, obviously pregnant, female at a busy suburban MKE intersection many times during the past month. She holds a cardboard sign that says "pregnant and homeless, please help". A bit of intel in the neighborhood indicated that she and her BF are living in a van. I've seen the van and the BF. I talked to the girl and she confirmed the intel. She told me that her and her BF had an apartment, the building burned and Red Cross put them up for 2 months, then booted them. BF is a painter, currently unemployed. The girl is 21 but looks younger. She is 5 months along and is noticeably bigger in the belly than when I last saw her 2 weeks ago. I saw her today and talked briefly. I have given her a few bucks. She said people have been fairly generous.

It breaks my heart to see her standing on a street corner, begging for money, especially while her BF sits on his ass. The situation seems very abusive to me but I wonder if she is somehow OK with it. Or is there something else going on here? I feel good about helping her a bit but the flip side of that is the lousy feeling from seeing just how messed up her situation appears to be.

You get the government you vote for. The saying is apt to many aspects to life. A fine version of this is, you get the relationship you stay in. She is happy where she is, no matter what she says, or she would leave the dude and strike out on her own. I would bet she could wander right back to her family, if only she would drop the looser, whom they probably detest for various reasons. That said, there could be numerous reasons she is living in a van. The whole story is never put out in the open. Mabye drugs, mabye mental health issues, mabye bla bla bla. Do what your conscience dictates, but life without consequences does not give the ability for a human to learn and grow, hopefully for the better. We have all been through it, and some of us are going through it right now. Hardline or softline it is all the same in the end. There will be sadness and heartbreak till the end of time. We all have our own way in how to deal with such things.

I agree with your statements but I would not describe her as "happy where she is". I know what you mean; I would use the word "complacent" instead. She's probably in a rut but it is a familiar and perversely comfortable rut.

It is probably a better term. Complacent, comfortable, familiar, also come to mind. It is much the same with abusive relationships where the abusee does not leave the abuser not because they are scared, but because they become complacent with the situation. Either way one can only hope that she decides to make the best of decisions, for the childs sake.

They would have a roof over their head in a week.

Living in a van in cold weather? How many hot strippers have loser boyfriends that don't work and are being supported by the girl. She was sentenced last week and it appears that her sentence was time served, though that's not clear from the ccap entries. She's no longer listed as an inmate, so it appears she's out. After several aborted meetings, first off SA, later directly off the burner number she used in her ads, I actually met her a while ago, probably 2 months ago. I invited her to coffee and she accepted and gave me a snapshot of her situation (I think I believed most of it). We didn't discuss drugs, and she didn't show any symptoms of drug use I could detect, but the only explanation that made sense from what she told me was that she had a mega drug problem. Hopefully those 3+ weeks in jail allowed for some detox, and perhaps she is pursuing some kind of treatment. From her FB she does have family in the area, and they appear reasonable middle class people. They might help her if she was seriously trying to clean up her act.
