Tijuana Reports

I went to get my passport card replaced at the county administration building. I asked if they will let you cross into Mexico with proof of passport application. She told me that they have heard they will let you pass with the application receipt, DL and copy of birth certificate. I will call the Mexican consulate when I have time.

I still walk to downtown in the afternoon even though the new building's exit leads you away from the direct route. If you also want to walk take the exit ramp from the new building and duck through the yellow tape at the end of the first ramp. Walk about fifty yards to the first parking lot and walk through it and exit to the walkway. You end up fifty yards from the stairs of the pedestrian bridge that goes over the right side lanes going into the USA This cuts about two blocks off the walk.

Was eating at a bar and grill today. Ate their special of the day. Three fish tacos with rice and beans and agua fresca. $5. Asked how much were their beers $2. 75. Delicious tacos and ice cold Tecate. The bill would have have $7. 75 if I paid in dollars. The total in pesos was 90 pesos. At the 16.27 pesos per dollar I received changing dollars for pesos just before the border that comes out to $5. 50. That's a difference of only $2. 25 but that's also a savings of 29%! Don't be lazy. Change your dollars and pay for everything in pesos.

Crossed into mexico for the first time since the new facility opened. It was pretty late 2-3 am (long night of partying). Anyways, there were 2 guards working and they barely gave me and my friend a second look. Granted we were the only two crossing at the time but they didn't ask for any form of I'd or any other questions for that matter.

Just as easy its always been.

When I walk to Tijuana I always notice the Train track. Is there a Hotel that is near the Train? I am thinking of renting a room, taking the train and walking to Tijuana.

If so, the Blue Line runs from downtown San Diego to San Ysidro and runs quite often. There are several hotels near there on the US side that run about $50 a night or less. I always use the trolley to get there and walk across. I have never stayed at one of these hotels but there are a few that are national chains (Rodeway, Knights Inn, Motel 6, Travel Lodge).

C3.[/QUOTE]I have stayed at most of the hotels in that area. Each was marginal, at best (IMHO). Uncomfortable beds. Not real clean. Small rooms. Non-working equipment (lights, microwave, WiFi). Noise from the trolley (Rodeway especially). One exception in San Ysidro is the Best Western, which is a few miles from any trolley stop but is much better than the ones closer to the border. For about the same price as that Best Western you can get Ticuan in Tijuana, which is very nice.

The only reason to stay in San Ysidro is if you need to make daily visits to the USA, or if you don't want to bring certain things into Mexico. Much nicer hotels in Tijuana for the same money.

I guess the Chinese tour groups have gotten the hang of the new entrance requirements. Crossed to San Ysidro today to do some banking. Did my stuff and returned to Tijuana. Entered the new building at about 2 PM and as usual there was a Chinese tour group lined up on the right side. The booths were busy too so the male immigration officer waved me to the Mexican national side so no need for the seven day pass. Walked downtown and there were at least two Chinese tour groups wandering around on Revolution. Walked around the Zona and didn't see anything to pique my interest. No sign of my Gilf. Stopped at Hotel Nelson and got a bucket of ten Coronitas. The price went up from 120 pesos to 150 pesos but of course the mesero swore it was still 120 until the bill came. Fuck their games with the prices. Mexico never changes. Gulped the ten beers in about half an hour. Lo and behold my Gilf was at her spot. Oh well I just turned 65 last week so lets see how that has changed my body. Went to the Hotel Campamento with my Gilf. Sure, by all means see both HK and Adelitas clubs, but also walk across the street a few yards to Tropical Bar (across from Hong Kong, can't miss it) and Las Chevalas, just across the alley behind HK and Adelitas. But if you want to go bad enough don't let that stop you. When entering Mexico on foot at San Ysidro they now require a passport. However if you play ignorant they will most likely let you enter with a warning to bring it next time. If you enter by car or are by foot at Otay you will not need one.

Returning to the USA You will need a passport. As long as you are a USA Citizen they will let you back with some proof license or birth certificate. Just depends on the agent as to how much he wants to hassle you.

Coming back the card allows you to use the ready lane. Sometimes the ready lane looks longer but it moves faster.

You can visit Tijuana without the passport card. Just bring your drivers license, birth certificate and the receipt showing that you applied for your card. The Mexican immigration and US customs will accept this. The only downside is that you cannot use the ready lane when crossing. The state dept processes the cards fairly fast. I got mine replaced in 2 weeks. The first time they sent it in 3 weeks.

Played dumb and gave the girl my ca drivers license and she said not acceptable form of I'd for entering Mexico. I said, I'm sorry wrong card and pulled out my passport card. The one I use for the ready lane coming back into the US. I asked the girl what would of happened if I forgot my passport card at home and only had my drivers lic and she said I would not be allowed into mex without a passport or passport card. They concentrate on solving newsworthy crime. Even at the cost of being underhanded using informers and snitches. San Diego is a big city now but still thinks small. That's why the Chargers leaving San Diego is a done deal. The LE in San Diego County have too much time on their hands and strangle the SW and strip club action. Girl is super nice and will give you the pill / pills anyway you like. I get the generics for like 4-5 bucks and only take a 1/2 and works like a charm. Not sure of the name and its in an area where there's a few other pharmacies right near by so it's hard to explain. I might be down there thxgiving day. I'll report back with info. Moe.
