Thanks guys.[/QUOTE]As a noob, I would say the biggest thing that will help you as far as being safe is doing research. Always google the numbers before you ever visit them and overtime you'll be able to weed out the fake ones pretty quickly.
You should catch up on the forums here pretty often to stay informed with what's going on, this is my go-to for info. I would actually suggest only visiting providers that have been reviewed here when starting out.
I usually hand the $ in the beginning to make the provider more comfortable, but that's because I do very good research on them beforehand. Wouldn't want to pay first if I was TOFT, which I almost never do since I'm fairly new as well. But other than that, remember things can be negotiated so try not to overpay.
