In the early part of the 20th century, it was quite common in the US for girls to marry in their teens. Both of my grandmothers did. As with other countries, it had a lot to do with economics, availability of suitors (most girls married local guys) , and maturity level. Teens these days act like children whilst their grandmothers learned how to cook, clean, sew and otherwise take care of a home and be responsible starting at a young age. My point is, the legal age of 18 in the US and western countries fits the current social situation here. The "adult" age of 18 is much less of an issue in most non-Western countries where mores and customs differ. We all hate a young woman being exploited for sex, but that implies she's doing it against her will, is afraid and sees no way out. In other countries, such as the Philippines, a monger is often doing a teen a favor by taking her in and providing for her as she'd be out on the streets otherwise.

I guess what irks me the most is when the US and other western countries try to impose our "standards" on other countries when they are largely unwelcome and / or their own governments don't give a shit. We have too many social, economic and fiscal problems in this country that need fixing without beccoming the world's police.

Was going through BP last night and was thinking there were a lot more new faces then normal and a lot of out of town phone numbers.
