The Republicans in the Senate came out with a report on Backpage's activities and the people who run Backpage decided to self-censor their site just before they were due to testify before the Senate. So, unfortunately, there's nothing for any Federal court to overturn.

The above quoted link didn't work for me. This story appears on AOL. A congressional hearing where evidence that BP was editing ads to better hide potential sex trafficking apparently prompted BP to make this "voluntary" move. The pressure apparently made it cheaper to shut down than fight.

If they'd left the ads alone, they'd have likely been safe, at least on legal grounds. There's plenty of precedent for publishers not being liable or responsible for ad content. It is also alleged that ad content and images were altered by screeners in order to accept the ads. BP has been refusing to comply with congressional requests for information. Do you have evidence otherwise, or are you claiming that, for once in his 2 terms, the Senate is suddenly cooperating with the President?

Perhaps the owner of BP will be featured on an episode of "American Greed". The hearing through out a lot of statistics, one being that more than 80% of rescued trafficked girls were promoted on BP. But trafficked girls probably represented a very small percent of ad revenue. If the owner of BP hadn't been so greedy for that extra revenue and instead retained decent standards and cooperated with law enforcement, he could have continued to make $100 million a year and could have eventually run for President (LOL).

It's well established law that advertisements for illegal goods and services are not protected and can be subject to prosecution, for the [I]advertisers, [/I]while the publishers of the ads are not held liable in most cases. By changing the ads themselves, BP fucked themselves.
