The free ads weren't taken away for a profit motive, they were taken away for plausible deniability about sex traffickers freely using backpage. The social link is another measure to imply, effectively or not, that posters are not doing so anonymously.

"Additional ads" was my goldmine. I always picked from there, assuming pretty much what you said -- lower volume, newer to the industry, less likely to have management, etc.
