An out of area phone number isn't by itself a disqualifier, but should tell you to dig deeper before contacting.

Sometimes the numbers are from text apps like text now. That app allows you to choose the area code and will randomly generate the number. It also allows free calls and texting. And people can change thier number every week with a new area code if they want.
