I travel extensively, I don't think I have formally checked out of a room or returned key cards in well over a decade. I have never had a hotel at any tier charge for unreturned cards. Sometimes I leave them in the room, sometimes I don't, zero issues. You can pay for a full night, use the room for 5 minutes and leave, they won't care. Any by the hour place is going to be a dump.

Is typically fine. I never send any deposits unless it's someone I've seen more than a few times and even then no more than 50 or 100 absolute tops. If they scam me out of 50 I'm annoyed but fine.
