In three previous visits to the referenced shop (two different therapists), there was no discussion but the finish was still adeptly applied. The previously established 20 gratuity was presented after the fact and it was received with a happy face. Now we're starting to see gratuity inflation to 30-40.
With Lily and Yoshi now defunct the options for higher end spa services has been significantly reduced but at least when they were in business your money went a long way in terms of service. But those were Korean-run shops and not the Chinese ones that are proliferating now. The Chinese business model may be different. A good experiment would be to leave the standard "super sized" gratuity visible and see if that changes anything (but being careful not to let it get away if only simple service is provided).
