Just got home from a trip down south. Man that border wait sucks. The past two trips I have driven across and drive up to Otay to cross back north. The wait is much shorter than SY, but still a pain.

This place looks like some of the clubs up here in the states! Fancy stuff. When I went down there (pretty regularly) all the bars were nasty, dirty, with dim lights and watered down drinks. The only reason you went in was for the sex. Back then all the dancers were naked, and half the bgirls walking around just wore panties. The 3 largest clubs along La Coahuila, Adelita Bar, Las Chaveles, and Hong Kong have morphed into contemporary high glitz high tech multi-level clubs. Hong Kong set the bar extremely high a few years ago and Adelita lost it's former supremacy and is just trying to keep up. It isn't my preference. I preferred the old border town red light Mexican flavor. This was inevitable after the internet opened up the pleasures of the zona norte to gringos in the late 90's. Previously the gringos mostly stuck to the Revolucion district. So the makeover is all to capture the gringo dollar and to a degree to make these fun places for hot chicas to migrate to from the south and be comfortable working in. In many ways Tijuana is better now than ever, but it has lost the old exotic flavors. However, aside from these 3 bars, there are plenty of vintage down and dirty joints left throughout the zona norte. Very few gringos ever walk into these places, but there is hidden treasure to be mined in them.

Do not forget about Chicago Club. Hasn't changed much but was once in the top three.

Camel, I don't know about you but I liked the dirty, nasty places. They were my fav's! :D

And, Sarge, I definitly remember the Chicago Club. That's the one you entered at kind of a corner and walked down the stairs, right? I don't remember any donkey shows there (like the Blue Fox) , but I sure remember lots of fucking and sucking up on the stage for "showtime". What were your top 3?

It is still a nice club but hasn't kept up with the others, but sadly it has become irrelevant in any discussion of contemporary Tijuana because it is and has been a ghost town for several years. Getting more and more deserted just when it seemed it couldn't get any more deserted. No chicas, no customers. Having said that, it is still worth a visit because the few chicas they have around are nice, the vibe once you hook up with them is a million times better than super hustle Adelita and Hong Kong, and the service is going to be better generally than in the other gringo clubs (though Hong Kong is still pretty good in the service dept.). We are literally talking about maybe half a dozen chicas at any given time (maybe more daytime, I don't know). Some of them just use the place to arrange outdates with regular clients. But walk in, have a beer and you might end up quite surprised to find a hot friendly chica.

The place can't possibly have made a profit for years. So one can only imagine how it possibly continues to be in operation. It was the number one club for the hottest chicas when I discovered the zona in the mid-90's - actually just an unbelievable array of beautiful young women in cocktail dresses lining the bar and the walls and on the dance floor all dancing together to advertise their presence and their hotness. In those years, Adelita had dozens of older less attractive women as they were still concentrating on appealing to the locals crowd with a lower budget. Chicago remained my favorite gringo club over the years but ultimately I prefer the locals dives that don't cater to gringos. I hope this club will find a route back to its former glory, but for now as far as most regular Tijuana mongers are concerned, it doesn't exist.

Based on what I'd read so much about the Chicago Club here on this forum, I had to stop by on my recent week long tour of Tijuana a while back. Actually, I stopped by a couple of times, but could only make it during the early afternoon. It didn't appear to open until at least noon and was empty every time I checked in. No chicas. I did hit several of the little dive bars in the zone, as well as the current 'biggies', HK, AB, the Trop and Chaveles. Enjoyed them all, and sessioned from each of those four. Would love to have seen 'La Chicago' in its day.

But I envy guys like Dirty Old Guy who prowled Tijuana before the gringos came en masse, and before the PAN party controlled the municipal government more often than not. The old ruling PRI party was anything goes and the conservative PAN has been unfriendly to the so-called zones of tolerance. Right now PRI is back in power in Tijuana which resulted in the bars going back to all night fiestas after the PAN had imposed shutdowns by 3AM which meant the bars were getting cleared out and chairs being put on tables by 2:30. But Tijuana as a 24 hour town is back.

When I discovered Chicago it was dominated by "whales" from asia and asian american customers. Caucasian gringos started coming in but always very few Mexicanos. The music was disco, rock, and latino pop, but never the latino dance music featured in the other bars (cumbia, salsa, ranchero, merengue). The "Your tip is my salary" sign in the men's room was in 5 languages. The first three Asiatic languages, then spanish, then english! I don't want to say the chicas were exactly trained, but the clear culture of the club was to appeal to the asian clientele which meant the girls were not supposed to be openly aggressive or pinch your ass or grab your package as you walked by as the Adelita girls would. In fact, they were pretty much beautiful emotionless stoic mannequins. Newbie gringos were actually intimidated as many were in a regular singles bar meet market. The girls were beautiful and didn't seem easy like they did at the other bars. Of course once you made eye contact and demonstrated interest you got a warm smile in return. The game was to have a waiter invite the chica to your table. Once she was there, she was your happy fiance. The stoicism washed away the instant you said "hola, mucho gusto" and bought her a drink.

So Chicago was unique in its quality and presentation. But amazingly that worked against it as the monger mass apparently preferred to have chicas attacking them the minute they walked inside in bars like Adelita.

The original Hong Kong opened in the late 90's and its name and style was an open challenge to Chicago's courting of asian and asian american clientele. And they stole many of the celebrity Chicago chicas of the time. Chicago held its ground as a dominant club into the early 2000's, but Hong Kong was incredibly creative and aggressive and just ran over the competition like a Monster Truck by around 2009. In the meantime, Chicago withered and passed into an ongoing coma.

I didn't mention Tropical. It has long been one of my favorite places where I consistently get the best service from adorable young 19 year olds fresh off the bus from Sinaloa, but physically it is still a locals oriented dump which most gringo traffic moves away from after a quick look. Plenty of gringos and especially asian americans in there, but mostly, its the same group of hardcore regulars who got comfortable here many years ago.
