You just dial the GV number, enter your pin and make the call. You can have the GV calls forwarded to any number and turn it off and on at will. Same with text messages. On my phone, the GV number shows up as an incoming call from one of my legit customer's data center so even if I forget to un-forward it, it looks like a real business call. You can verify with your real phone as well if you're careful since it's one time. You should take her advice, this is right on point.
