WTF is up with the Kalihi Bars?
As a long time (over 30 yrs) patron of the Kalihi KBars I was kind of baffled on a recent trip. I retired around 5 yrs ago and haven't visited regularly like I used to because I live on the west side. Had an appt in town and hit a few of the old hangouts before I headed home. Visited these places between noon and 3 pm, same times I used to when I took off of work early.
First stop was Oasis (old Arisu), only one guy drinking at the bar and the bargirls sitting in a booth chatting. Sat down at the bar, male bartender (which makes no sense at a KBar) and ordered a beer. None of the women, including Michelle (from Waterfall fame) even bothered to get up and say hi, they just sat and continued chatting. I drank 1 beer and got up and left.
Next stop NK (formerly Platinum or Silver Emporium?) Nobody drinking at the bar. Ordered a beer, got served by Amber (formerly Waterfall) after serving me she went and sat down and continued chatting with a bargirl I didn't recognize. Drank 2 beers and left.
Last stop Spotlite. One guy drinking at the bar. Ordered a beer. Nicole walked by and said hi, long time no see and that was it. Went back to her booth and started chatting with other bargirls. I drank 1 beer and left.
Out of the 3 bars I didn't have one bargirl approach and try to start a conversation or even ask for a good luck drink. What I don't understand is I've spent hundreds in these places in the past, even had a lot of money in my pocket to spend on this occasion but no opportunities to spend. How are these places staying in business and why aren't these bargirls as attentive as they used to be?
Paying with $100 Is Very Good Advice
Go back and pay your first drink with a $100 bill and see what happens.
Good luck.
These days, money talks. However, most of these early places do not really cater to the early customers. Most of the early customers are not in it to buy drinks for the girls. These drinkers are house customers that just want a couple of beers with chips, etc and then they head on home. If you want action, you need to visit these bars in the evenings (preferably after 7:30 pm). Then paying with a $100 bill might get you some attention (hopefully). Also, if you go up and talk to the girls, they will be more than happy to sit with you. A lot of these girls are new to the business so they are not too familiar with how they should approach customers. For the Superbowl, went to a couple of bars where some of the girls were younger and pretty, but they did not approach the customers. The mama had to bring them over to our table to get drinks, etc. Just my opinion.
Business and 1035 Kapiolani
So if this post is correct, it seems like Business is going to move to 1035 Kapiolani Blvd.
I used to like to go to that stand alone bar at 1035 Kapiolani, across from Mckinley.
Occasionally had some not bad wahines. I think I started going there because a wahine I liked at another bar told she was going to work over there. I don't remember which wahine, or what bar she worked at. I don't think I got any play from her, I think she mostly took care of me with food, maybe a little touchy-touchy.
I was racking my brain trying to remember what the bar was named. I finally googled it, I think the stand alone bar at 1035 Kapiolani, across Mckinley baseball field was named Emerald City and I guess before that it was named Geisha House. I don't know if there is any historical connection to the current Emerald City in Kalihi.
I don't think I ever went there when it was Geisha House.
I don't know how it survived not being torn down amid all the redevelopment of that block, but I'm glad it did.
I think it's kind of nice to still have a small piece of nostalgic bar history survive all the closures and changes and government and take-overs and redevelopment of the area. I'm sure they all tried to get / steal it away from the owners, whoever they are.
I'm surprised crooked government never stepped in with eminent domain or strong-arm coercion.
I guess it became restaurants, cafe maru, then chingu, then hook'd. I never went to any of those iterations. I think mostly because I couldn't be bothered to figure out the parking. Which I think will be a major factor on Business surviving there.
I wonder if they going do an old fashioned grand opening. I miss the kb, stripper bar ads in the sports section. (Good old days).
I hope it stays a hostess bar format and not turn into a sports bar, or local bar format.
I guess it will be interesting to see, how and what they do.
