These were purchased during an undercover investigation here in Honolulu," said Mike Carney, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security's USA Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Carney says the pills were sold through an online forum. The seller would schedule a face-to-face meeting with the buyer for products that "were smuggled into the country. ".
Carney says men who use the unapproved medication put their health at risk.
One of the more difficult products to spot is pet flea treatment.
"The counterfeit boxes came in separate from the chemical inside here in Hawaii at a warehouse not too far from here," Carney said. "These items were put together. The chemical was put into the box and packaged for sale to pet shops. ".
Carney says several pet deaths on the mainland have been blamed on the counterfeit product, though so far none have been reported in Hawaii.
USA Customs and Border Protection spokesman Jim Kosciuk says for the first six months of last year, the federal government made more than 200 seizures and collected counterfeit merchandise worth nearly $4 million in Hawaii.
"Counterfeit goods can be anything from sunglasses to jerseys to textiles to handbags to cigarettes to pharmaceuticals, personal care, high-intensity headlights and the list goes on and on," Kosciuk said.
