Lots of direct flights from Tijuana to all majors cities. Cancun and South America are routed through MEX. Have to pay tax and airport fees, about $15-25 each flight.

Volaris also flies into LAX, San Jose, NYC, Boston, Texas, Bogota and Lima. Domestic flights can only be book 1 day in advance, international flights 3 days, so flights are confirmed a day in advance, far better than standby. It's a very good deal.
