I have not heard of this strategy before. How do you determine what that extra tip amount should be? What if you're wrong? Why is the tip needed when you've already forked over a significant amount in return for nothing? I'm confused.

So many guys are no-shows and so many guys show up late, etc. Let's face it, if you're running late to a dental appointment, you might call the office to let them know you're running late. It's a pain to reschedule a dental appointment. But if you're ten or twenty minutes late to an incall, it's easy to minimize it. (Personally, I do try to call them to let them know I'm running late.) But for a provider, it means that she might have to rush you or else other guys will be pushed back, or she'll lose those appointments altogether.

But some providers are just sooooooo difficult to arrange an appointment with that it's not worth it, at least not unless they are truly spectacular in looks or service. There are maybe one or two providers I'd be willing to wait around for an hour, past the scheduled time, to see. And don't you love it when you show up and the provider tells you she'll be ready in 5 minutes. . . And then 10 minutes later she says 5 "just five minutes more" . . . And then 15 minutes later she comes up with some excuse (usually it involves an emergency like taking her aunt to the hospital). I never return to see those providers again, because as the saying goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. But the second time I'm the fool. ".
