I have never encountered a bill torn in half lengthwise. But generally, a bank will accept a bill if it is more than 50% intact. Recollection was that I had to use a federal bank and there was a crap load of paperwork to establish what happened, why, etc. I also don't recall getting an exchange at that moment, but having to wait for the bank president to review the situation. If he / she is there then the exchange happens quickly. State banks, which are not covered under the Federal banking acts, generally will not exchange or accept the currency.

Of course some jackass may accuse you of destroying currency protected under the law. How do you explain torn or worse yet, cut?

Sounds like the best option is to simply hold the money until you're done to avoid the trips out the door, etc.
