You can meet up with a seller in a safe location and exchange cash for the bitcoins. It's a much better method if maintaining your privacy is important to you, but that convenience and privacy come with a price. You'll pay more for the bitcoins than you would at Coinbase. It also comes with some risk that the seller will turn out to be a scammer or thief.
There are a few other online exchanges (such as Bitfinex and BitStamp) that each have their own benefits and drawbacks when it comes to security, privacy, cost, and convenience.

For the customer, it's a much safer option of electronic payment than credit cards (no concern about fraudulent use of your credit card number), and for the merchant it eliminates counter-party risk (charge backs, stolen cards, etc). Also, in many cases, it can have cheaper transaction fees than credit cards.
Backpage does accept regular bitcoin transactions. They don't require you to use "[NOPARSE]bitcoin4backpage[/NOPARSE]", whatever that is. Acquiring your first bitcoin to use is a bit of a hassle, but once you've done that it is extremely easy to both spend and receive.
