As I see it, an independent provider is an owner-operator who is free to set their own prices.
So an indie therapist who charges 100-120 for an hr but then demands or expects 20-40 in tips is actually engaged in low ball pricing tactics, especially since you can get a decent legit massage for anywhere between $50-$80. Of course, if they go above and beyond, that's a different story.
There are plenty if indies who don't expect tips for standard services and it helps to do advance homework. When I've found myself with one who does expect an additional tip, I let her know clearly but politely how I feel about low ball tactics. Since there are plenty of options out there, there's no need to put up with that kind of BS. After all, it's your hard-earned money!

Everyone has an opinion on this so here's mine. I look at it like this; If I go to StarBucks and order a coffee that costs $3 and I pay $3 for that coffee, why should I drop money in their tip jar? Their job is to hand me that coffee and that's what they're paid to do, it's part (if not the main part) of their job. BUT, if they're super friendly, put extras (whatever I ask for) in that coffee, package it above and beyond, extra "stuff", great experience, etc. , then yeah, I might dump the change in the jar. However, the basic service I'm paying for is still covered in the $3 coffee. Why should I pay extra for something that's supposed to happen anyway? Do you tip at McDonalds when they hand you your food? They're supposed to do that and it's built into the price. Do you give them an extra buck or two when they throw ketchup into the bag? It's not an unreasonable request and it's expected if you ask for it. Restaurants are another story but it's not my fault they choose to work for less than minimum wage and expect tips to keep them afloat. Superior service may earn a tip but if your job is to carry a plate to my table and that's all you do, why should you expect a tip? If you don't like the compensation for the "standard" job you do (which if you did better, you'd make more money), find something else to do. Not my problem. If there's a certain donation for a massage "package" expected, why would you throw extra cash in there if they just met the minimum requirements? I tip pretty generous and often but not if it only met minimum standards. When you do that, it just inflates expectations and removes the incentive to provide above and beyond.

One of my personal red flags is any asian ad with a NY area phone prefix. If you do a forum search for the keyword "crapshoot" you'll see a lot of discussion on the topic. But the short version is that the fake pics and the promises of exotic services (nuru) or women (Japanese, Singaporean, etc.) are nothing more than marketing BS.
