I try not to tell other people what to do; but there are two reasons I wish people would stop paying deposits: 1) I don't want you to lose your money, and 2) It normalizes deposits, which are an incentive for ripoffs. If we acted shocked that someone would ask, and make it clear that we spend lot of money but never pay deposits, most of them would quit asking.

I am willing to send $ to a provider I've met before under some situations or when I'm physically with them but that's it. I totally get that need and was fine doing it, especially since it was at the end of the date.
