And that assumes that "runs its course," doesn't mean seasonal like the flu; if it's seasonal that means "second verse, same as the first a little bit louder and a little bit worse. " That further assumes that the only deaths are from the virus itself and that nobody dies who didn't have to because our health care "system" crashes and burns under the weight of the millions of new sick and dying. Every time someone compares the death rate of COVID to something else they forget to include in their calculation that the something else is for a full year, not for a couple of months. The reason we are doing the shitty option 2 is because option 1 is even shittier.
We didn't really do option 1 with Swine and Bird flu it's just that the rate at which they spread was so different that most of us didn't notice that we did option 2. Right now, our best guess suggests that people can be asymptomatic and contagious for weeks. With Swine and Bird flu, that period of time when a person might have transmitted the disease was measured in days and almost always accompanied by symptoms; it made it much easier for health care officials to track and quarantine both those who were infected and those who came in contact with the infected. Between the way it spreads and the lack of tests, COVID is almost impossible to get out in front of like that. Option 2 assumes that you are isolating everyone who may have come in contact with someone who is infected. With COVID that's everyone in the country, because until we can test everyone there is no way of knowing who has it and who doesn't. COVID is also different from Swine Flu because COVID appears to survive a relatively long time on surfaces and different from Bird FLu because Bird Flu very rarely transfers human to human.
So basically door number 1 would give us door number 2 PLUS the added bonus of millions dead instead of thousands, which is probably what we are looking at right now, if we are lucky. I'm going with door number 2, and since so many people who enjoy are hobby are in the most vulnerable population they should be happy with door number 2 also.
[QUOTE=Camera3;4710041]You are correct. It is a nasty bug. Not because the bug is particularly nasty, as in, it isn't the zombie apocalypse, but because of the origin of the bug. This virus runs rampant among animals (as does bird flu and swine flu of the past). Animal viruses can mutate and infect humans, but then humans don't give them to other humans. This one percolated in a live animal market in China and figured out a way to become human to human. If you have ever been to a third world market, you can understand how that can happen. It has since mutated one more time, so people can now get it twice.
The problem with that is, viruses that spread human to human run into those of us that have some cousin viruses that we contracted at some point in our lives that fight it off enough that we don't get sick, especially if we drank from garden hoses, swam in lakes and streams, and other practices now deemed unsafe. Not so with any animal virus that has mutated. Our human immune system doesn't know what to do with it.
For most of us, it is a dry cough that may last a month (and we are contagious that whole month), or the symptoms of maybe a bad cold, but to those with other issues, like compromised immune systems or a history of lung issues (like, you smoked heavy your whole life), those people are hozed. This bug can scar lungs in the worst cases, and that is how it kills people.
Sad, but there only two strategies to fight it. #1, let it spread until everyone gets sick, some die, and it runs the course. #2, keep people separated from each other, thus, starving the damn bug.
Our political leaders have chosen #2 without any consideration to what that means (basically, the same financial outcome as if it was the zombie apocalypse). And that strategy may not work well, anyway. Looking back, we may decide #1 was the wiser (like we did with the swine flu and bird flu).
As you can see, I paid attention in Biology 203 way back when.
Play safe, and stock up on toilet paper.

Make a mental note of the number of cases. Wait a few days then checked that same link again and notice the difference.

So, it seems Prince Charles has the virus. Looking at his history, he is one of us! How else would he get it?
