Had a business associate who broke it down as a percentage of income. I believe said he'd need to maintain income at minimum 120k a year and use 10 percent of his income for the hobby.

Do any of you guys budget, or have limits? I've been doing this for a while, but always done so loosely. Peaks and valleys.

When finances allow I tend to monger on the well established path, but when times are tough, less suitable scenarios are more the norm. Anything above $350 / hr more than once a month is tough, especially when numerous other opportunities can be had for half that amount elsewhere.
