I was asking about a car. Last time I crossed on foot it was fine on the way to Mexico, but then, on the way back to the US, the line was insanely long. I figured that with a car it might be faster to cross back to the US.

Rental cars are no insured outside of California. You will risk paying for any damages or theft if taken to Mexico.

It's not faster to cross back in cars as the READY car lanes are always 2 to 3 hours wait every night, even after midnight, whereas the pedestrian return line is usually only 5 to 10 minutes after 10 PM.

I have GLOBAL ENTRY so I drive my car over and cross back in the SENTRI lane very quickly. I would let guys without SENTRI / GLOBAL ENTRY off near the gate. They would walk across in 5-10 minutes and meet up North of the border to go home.
