I plan to be in town for some fun this upcoming week. For something new I plan on using the Carlyle for some dates. My question are will my car be safe and will I be safe? I don't want to loose my Thule roof rack/bars and I prefer to come out of my little 'ho adventures alive. Let me know.
I am such a regular at the Carlyle that I should have a room named after me...LOL.
A few tips in answer to your questions, and/or for others who plan to use the Carlyle:
1. I drive my "monger car" when I am trolling the Ave. It runs like a top mechanically, but it is a bit worse for wear physically, and I wouldn't cry about it if someone physically damaged it further or even stole it. It is a low profile target for LE, damages or theft. If you have a nice car, or something on it or in it worth stealing (including the car itself), then I would have a few worries parking it at the Carlyle.
The Carlyle is not in a model neighborhood. Five times out of 10 someone will approach you and offer to "watch your car" for some compensation, as if that will do any good. They will disappear as soon as you go inside.
I have never had any issues regarding parking my car there, but, then again, there is little worth stealing or damaging.
2. Regarding personal safety: I have never been harmed or even threatened in or near the Carlyle, nor heard about anyone being hurt or robbed. They have a "buzz in" entry system, but they pretty much buzz anybody in who rings the bell, so that is little comfort as far as safety is concerned. They used to have a "buzz out'' policy too, which is a lot safer, because, if someone who had nefarious intentions got in, they would have a tough time getting out. The guy behind the desk could still do a "lock down" of the front door if he heard any disturbance in the rooms, so that would discourage anyone who knows the operation from pulling anything. There are a lot safer ways to rob someone, like waiting until they come outside.
Of course, I don't take any chances either. I am registered to carry a concealed firearm and I keep it with me at all times. I never in my lifetime was in a situation where I felt I had to draw it, much less discharge it, but I am always wary of possible dangers lurking about.
3. If you plan on having a number of monger dates I more highly recommend the Neshaminy Inn on Route One near the turnpike. It is a bit farther from the K than the Carlyle, but it is a lot nicer and much safer. It's $32.50 all-in (including a $2 rebate for return of the room key) for a "short stay" from 5 AM until 4 PM.
If you are staying overnight I recommend a few of the cheaper but nice motels near the airport such as Motel 6 or the Red Roof Inn. About $55 (with AAA discount) gets you early morning check-in through 11 the next day.
