I used AES and EV and agree that the reviews were next to useless. Much more useful were reviews posted in private areas, but these were frequently leaked resulting in problems for the original review poster. Another useful tool were the parties and get together's allowing for face to face contact with other guys. I frequently spent most of a get together talking to other guys and getting their opinions, eventually having a core group I could pm or email and get some decent, private intel.

Also keep in mind that just because NR (or any other board) has photos posted doesn't deem them an accurate representation. Actual photos plus photo shop or from ten years prior may not be "fake" but they're not exactly "real" either. If one SP or LEO was so inclined, she could make several falso hobbyist accts and leave a decent amount of reviews and other hobbyists would be none the wiser. I agree, there's a lot of flaw in the star rating system, in fact there should be no rating system just reviews of plain simple facts like the one you've suggested. But also like your review, hobbyists can let flaws in looks and other slight issues slide when giving reviews. All-in-all, there is no perfect system for reviews which is why I'm using multiple boards to screen for my next SP.
